Pioneers in Computing and IT

Computer technology has come a long way since the first computer was invented. Along the way, many people from diverse backgrounds contributed inventions and innovations that helped us get to where we are today with modern computers. Without these individuals, information technology would not be where it is today. 

Early Computer Pioneers

Ada Lovelace

Ada Lovelace was born in 1815 to Anna Milbanke and the poet Lord Byron. Her mother Anna Milbanke educated her to excel in mathematics. When Lovelace was still young, she was shown the Difference Engine (a mechanical calculator developed by Charles Babbage) and published a set of notes which contained the first computer algorithm for the Analytical Engine in 1843. Lovelace predicted at the time that computers would eventually be used outside of mathematics for things like composing music and made predictions about how technology would influence society. 

Alan Turing

Alan Turing was born in 1912. While completing his degrees, he developed the concept of the Turing machine. Turing proved that there were some yes/no mathematical questions that could never be solved computationally which defined computation and its limitations. These findings would go on to become one of the seeds of computer science and his conceptual Turing machine (so named by his Doctoral advisor) is considered a predecessor of modern computer programs. During the Second World War, Turing developed the Turing-Welchman Bombe which was used to decipher Nazi codes and intercept Nazi messages. After the war, Turing's Imitation Game (now known as the Turing test) was created as a means to evaluate the abilities of artificial intelligence. 

Margaret Hamilton

Margaret Hamilton was born in 1936. While working in the meteorology department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, she developed software for predicting weather. Later Hamilton would go on to work on the software that was used in the NASA Apollo command and lunar modules. With her experience writing software, she wanted to ensure that this skill would get its due respect and coined the term “software engineering.” Culminating her experience working on the Apollo missions and moon landings, Hamilton formalized what she learned into a theory that would later become the Universal System Language. 

Admiral Grace Hopper

Grace Hopper was born in 1906. During the Second World War, she joined the US Navy Reserve after taking a leave from her role as a mathematics professor at Vassar College. In the Navy, she was assigned the Bureau of Ships Computation Project at Harvard University where she worked on the programming team for the Mark I computer. After the war and her time at Harvard, she began working on more powerful computers and recommended that a programming language be developed that used English words rather than symbols. This concept would eventually become FLOW-MATIC the first programming language to use English words which also necessitated the invention of the first compiler (a program that translates source code into machine code). Notably, she is also credited with first using the term “computer bug” after a real bug (a moth) flew into a computer she was working on. Later in her career, she was one of the designers of COBOL, a programming language that is still in use today. 

NASA and the Human Computers 

The following women all worked on various NASA projects. Some even were hired as human computers. They were tasked with completing complex calculations by hand for all sorts of situations from wartime thrust-to-weight ratios to Apollo orbit trajectories. They all went on to have impressive careers in mathematics and computer science. 

Annie Easley developed the energy analytics code used to analyze power technology including the technology that was used in battery technology for Centaur rockets and early hybrid vehicles

Katherine Johnson was a physicist, mathematician, and space scientist who provided the calculation for important missions like the first orbit of the Earth and the Apollo 11 moon landing. 

Dorothy Vaughan was a mathematician who would eventually become the first African American supervisor of NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics which would later become NASA) and a FORTRAN expert programmer working on the Scout Launch Vehicle Program (a family of rockets that placed small satellites in orbit). 

Mary Jackson was NASA’s first Black female engineer. She worked on wind tunnel and flight experiments and would go on to earn NASA’s most senior engineering title. 

Melba Roy Mouton was a Head Mathematician at NASA working on Project Echo, the first experiment in passive satellite communication. At NASA, she wrote programs that calculated locations and trajectories of aircraft. 

Evelyn Boyd Granville worked on multiple projects in the Apollo and Mercury programs for NASA. She worked on computer techniques related to concepts like celestial mechanics and trajectory computation. 

Innovators in Modern Technology

Hedy Lamarr

Hedy Lamarr was born in 1914. A movie actress during the golden age of Hollywood, she was also a self-taught inventor. During the Second World War, she read about radio-controlled torpedoes which could potentially be jammed by enemy forces. She and a composer friend proposed and patented an idea for a frequency-hopping radio signal that used existing player piano technology. The principles of this work would eventually be used in familiar technologies like WiFI, Bluetooth, and GPS. 

Guillermo Gonzalez Camarena

Guillermo Gonzalez Camarena was born in 1917. An electrical engineer, in 1940 he patented an adapter that let monochrome cameras use colors. This technology was one of the earliest forms of color television. Camarena’s system would eventually be used by NASA for the Voyager mission and made color images of Jupiter possible.

Gerald (Jerry) Lawson 

Jerry Lawson was born in 1940. Working as a semiconductor engineer for the Fairchild company, he worked on a team that developed the Fairchild Channel F, a color video game console that was designed to use interchangeable game cartridges. Previously, most game systems had built-in programming. He would later be dubbed the “father of the video game cartridge��� for this work. 

Mark E. Dean

Mark Dean was born in 1957. An inventor and computer scientist, he is the chief engineer of the IBM team that released the IBM personal computer. He holds three of the nine patents for the PC. He and his team also created the first gigahertz computer chip and he also helped develop the color PC monitor. Along with Dennis Moeller, he developed the Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) bus which was a precursor to modern bus structures like PCI and PCI express. 

Clarence “Skip” Ellis

Clarence Ellis was born in 1943. He was a computer scientist and professor who pioneered in Computer Supported Cooperative Work and Groupware. In fact, while working at Xerox PARC, he and his team developed a groupware system called OfficeTalk. For the first time, this system allowed for collaboration from a distance using ethernet. He also focused on icon-based graphical user interfaces (GUIs) that have become prevalent in modern computing. 

Gladys West

Gladys West was born in 1930. A mathematician, she was hired to work for the US Navy to more accurately model the shape of the Earth. She used algorithms to account for all sorts of variations in the shape of the Earth and her model would eventually be used as the basis for the Global Positioning System (GPS).

Camelot Theatre Review

"Camelot" at the Vivian Beaumont  may attract a modern audience. What was originally written by Alan Jay Lerner (he also did the lyrics as well) and music by Frederick Loewe is now modified by Aaron Sorkin (A Few Good Men). The problem with this "Camelot" is not the acting nor the singing, it is with Sorkin trying to take a classic and making it modern.

 The stories premise is the same, a young boy, Arthur Andrew Burnap) pulls the old king's sword out of a rock, in doing so, he becomes king. As a young man he relies on Merlyn ( an excellent Dakin Matthews who doubles as Pellinore as well) to tell him what the future brings. At 104 years old, Merlyn dies leaving Arthur to fend for himself. England has just beaten France in a war and part of the settlement is that the French king must let Arthur marry his daughter, Guenevere (Phillipa Soo).

 Under the direction of Bartlett Sher the two never mesh. We never believe that these two are in love; neither do we feel any affection toward her lover, Lancelot du Lac. Equally confusing is Arthur's first love, Morgan Le Fey. In this rendition of the musical she is smarter than Arthur, more confident than he and like Guenevere, she is a free spirit who doesn't need anything from anyone. In the time of "Camelot", woman were very dependent on men and in traditional times were not independent.

 While I thought most of the songs were very good, much of the choreography was not. "The Lusty Month of May" was just awful and so was "Fie on Goodness". Byron Easley never took the dancing deep enough to get excited about it.

 The real problem with "Camelot" lies in the updating of the book. I was almost waiting for King Arthur to call his Round Table Knights "Dude" ; and the same with Lancelot, I was waiting for him to be called "Bro".

 Sorkin has the language in this classic of a musical all wrong, he has Arthur speaking and acting like a buffoon; he has Arthur's wife calling the shots and has Lancelot as the Alpha Male.

 Like so many classic Broadway shows of late, writers are taking a classic and making them "Woke". It is almost an apology as to how people acted back when; it is almost as if they are denying history as well. My advise is that if you want to change the classics, write a new musical instead.

ABC News’ “Nightline” ranked No. 1 in Total Viewers for the week of March 21, 2022, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research, beating CBS’ “The Late Late Show–JC” and NBC’s “Seth Meyers-SM.”

“Nightline” posted double-digit gains week to week in Total Viewers (+13% - 883,000 vs. 782,000), Adults 25-54 (+23% - 213,000 vs. 173,000) and Adults 18-49 (+27% - 157,000 vs. 124,000), drawing its largest overall audience in over 8 months — since w/o 7/5/21.

For the 4th time in the last 5 weeks, “Nightline” improved year to year in Total Viewers (+5% - 883,000 vs. 839,000).

Season to date, “Nightline” is beating CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49 for the 7th consecutive year — since the 2015-2016 season.

Last week “Nightline” reported on Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson sitting for the historic SCOTUS confirmation hearings and the turbulent break-up of Kim Kardashian and Kanye ”Ye” West. The program also featured stories on U.S. troops who were deployed to an Oklahoma City hospital to assist overwhelmed staff, Russian citizens opposed to Putin’s invasion fleeing to Mexico in hopes of U.S. asylum as they increasingly fear for their safety, and President Biden’s meeting with NATO leaders in Brussels.

NOTE: On Thursday (3/24/22) and Friday (3/25/22), CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” was retitled to “Late Late Show-JC-ENC” due to NCAA programming. In addition, CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” was retitled to “Late Late Show-JC” from Monday-Wednesday. For the week, NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” was retitled to “Seth Meyers-SM” due to being repeats. The retitled telecasts are not included in the season averages. CBS’s weekly averages are based on three days (Monday-Wednesday).

1st Quarter 2022:

ABC News’ “Nightline” drew 882,000 Total Viewers, 228,000 Adults 25-54 and 161,000 Adults 18-49 during the 1st Quarter of 2022, based on Most Current Data from Nielsen Media Research. “Nightline” beat CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25-54 during the 1st quarter for the 7th straight year — since 1Q16.  

“Nightline” posted gains from the previous quarter (4Q21) in Total Viewers (+5% - 882,000 vs. 839,000), Adults 25-54 (+1% - 228,000 vs. 225,000) and Adults 18-49 (+2% - 181,000 vs. 158,000).

“Nightline” narrowed its margins with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” from the previous quarter (4Q21) in Total Viewers by (-46% - 104,000 vs. 192,000), Adults 25-54 (-45% - 40,000 vs. 73,000) and Adults 18-49 (-45% - 30,000 vs. 55,000).

A history of (mostly Florida) recruits committing with Chucky dolls

It’s a tribute to past Gators defensive linemen Dante Fowler and Dominique Easley.

College football recruits who sign with the Florida Gators have started carrying on a tradition — using a Chucky doll to make their announcements. Yes, Chucky, the murderous doll that comes to life from the late 1980s and ’90s movies. It may sound odd, but there’s a real reason for this — it’s a tribute to past Gators defensive linemen. The tradition was started in 2011 by former Gator Dominique Easley:

“When I was a freshman last year, when Ease had [Chucky], I used to be with him all the time. I used to kidnap [Chucky] from him and stuff like that. So he always came with me,” he explained.

“I used to go to [Easley’s] room and we’d just watch TV and I’d be like, ‘Alright, I’m leaving and taking [Chucky] with me.’ He’d say, ‘Where you going with him?’ I’ll be like, ‘No, I’m just going outside in the hallway.’ And then [Chucky] ends up spending the night with me and stuff like that.”

Easley was drafted in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots, and has been with the LA Rams since 2016.

Former Florida defensive end Dante Fowler Jr., who was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars and is now with the LA Rams, carried on the tradition in 2013:

Since then we’ve seen a lot of players — both Gators and non-Gators — carry on the tradition coined by Fowler and Easley.

February 2015

Former Auburn Tiger Byron Cowart committed to the Tigers with a Chucky doll, citing Easley and Fowler as the inspiration.

This one though was likely a troll directed at Florida — Cowart was targeted by the Gators, but ended up at Auburn. The irony here is that Auburn had recently hired former Gators coach Will Muschamp as its defensive coordinator.

Cowart ended up transferring to Maryland in 2017.

February 2018

Four-star linebacker Andrew Chatfield picked Florida by donning a Gators cap and then holding up a Chucky doll on National Signing Day.

Chatfield said Fowler and Easley were the inspiration, too.

Shortly after Chatfield’s commitment, Chatfield’s teammate, linebacker Nesta Silvera, committed to Miami with the Chucky doll, too.

November 2018

Current Gators players have kept the tradition, too. Chucky made an appearance before Florida’s game against Florida State:

While this trend seems to be mostly continued by Florida players, it’s clear that going to Gainesville isn’t a requirement for using it. We’ll see how long the Chucky doll tradition lives on!

Little Red Rooster Ice Cream Company, d/b/a NadaMoo! (“NadaMoo!”) announced a limited recall of approximately 26,000 pints of its Strawberry Cheesecake Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert because they contain an undeclared almond ingredient.

The recalled products are pints of NadaMoo! Strawberry Cheesecake Non-dairy Frozen Dessert that were distributed to select distributors and retailers beginning February 19, 2019. The recalled products have a “Best By” date of 08/09/2020 printed at the bottom of the pint. In addition, the recalled pints will also have a UPC code of “854758001020” listed below the barcode on the back of the pint. To help identify if a pint of NadaMoo! No other NadaMoo! products or flavors are recalled. NadaMoo! wants to reassure customers that Strawberry Cheesecake pints not labeled with the expiration date listed above are not affected by the recall and therefore can be fully enjoyed rather than discarded.

The recall was initiated as soon as it was discovered that the pie crust inclusions in the Strawberry Cheesecake product containing almond flour as an ingredient was inadvertently filled into packaging that did not declare that ingredient, potentially exposing consumers to an undeclared allergen.

“Slave Play,” which marks the Off-Broadway debut of playwright Jeremy O. Harris,  begins, as one would expect from the title, in a plantation in the Antebellum South. It involves three interracial couplings: In the overseer’s quarters, a slave stops sweeping up and she starts twerking to Rihanna’s song “Work.” The overseer catches her, and, after forcing her to eat a cantaloupe of the floor, he starts having sex with her. In her boudoir, the mistress of the Plantation calls in one of her slaves to play the violin. He starts playing violin, but she insists that he play “the negro music you play for the ladies down at y’all’s cabin.” He starts playing R. Kelly’s “Ignition.” Then she starts having sex with him. In the barn, a slave orders around a white indentured servant. Suddenly Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s “Multi-Love” starts playing, and he starts having sex with him. In these first scenes, sexy and deliberately outrageous, Harris seems heavily influenced by the in-your-face pornographic theatrics of Thomas Bradshaw (whose works include Fulfillment, and Intimacy). But 45 minutes into the play, there is an abrupt shift and the characters replace their 19th century costumes for modern ones (The anachronism of the music should have been a tip-off.) The next hour feels influenced by Robert O’Hara (Bootycandy and Barbecue) in both its big surprise, and its intellectualized discourse for satirical effect. What we learn (spoiler alert) is that the three interracial couples were role-playing as part of “Antebellum Sexual Performance Therapy — a radical therapy designed to help black partners re-engage intimately with white partners from whom they no longer receive sexual pleasure.” This is the explanation given by the fourth interracial, who are the therapists.

What follows is discussion, debate, confrontation and apparently curative epiphanies, clearly meant to further explore issues of race and sex and gender, and drive home the central thesis of the play that all relationship and all individuals, black or white, continue to be affected by the racism that dates back centuries.

Some of what we hear is thought-provoking; there are a few laughs. But there is not as much insight or humor as the playwright seems to have intended. (Many theatergoers, though, are sure to find it just as uncomfortable as the playwright seems to want.)  And, at two hours without an intermission, it’s simply too long, and too repetitive.

The production of “Slave Play” at New York Theatre Workshop is certainly in good hands. Robert O’Hara (yes, the playwright) is the director, and the cast is first-rate…and brave. The gift that Harris gives to the performers are aria-like speeches, and they make the most of them — especially Ato Blankson-Wood and James Cusati-Moyer portraying the gay couple.

The main feature of Clint Ramos’ set is a backdrop of mirrors cleverly reflecting the painting of an old Southern Plantation in the back of the auditorium. The mirrors also show the audience to ourselves, an obvious metaphor.

Harris has gotten a stunning amount of attention recently — awards, press profiles — for a 29-year-old playwright who is still a student at the Yale School of Drama. He’ll get more when a second play of his, “Daddy” starring Alan Cumming, opens at the Vineyard Theater in February.  Perhaps he’s gotten too much, because “Slave Play” could benefit from some reworking.

Martin Truex Jr. cruises to 4th win of the season at Kentucky

Martin Truex Jr. is closing the gap on Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick.

The defending Cup Series champion won his fourth race of the season Saturday night at Kentucky in dominating fashion. He led 174 of 267 laps and is now just one win behind Busch and Harvick, who lead the series with five wins each in the first 19 races of the season.

No one could challenge Truex straight up. The only drivers that could were those that took two tires on pit stops and assumed the lead via pit strategy. But even when Brad Keselowski sprinted away on that strategy, Truex ran him down and coasted through the final green-flag stretch of the race for the win.

Truex won the first two stages of the race as well. He had by far the race’s fastest car and it was also a car that wanted to drive away on its own after Truex started celebrating the win.

The win is Truex’s second-straight at Kentucky. And he’s also the only driver who’s ever won a stage at the track. He swept the first two stages on the way to his win a year ago. This year, his win snaps an even-numbered-year streak of Brad Keselowski’s. Keselowski had won at Kentucky in 2012, 2014 and 2016.

It seems an incredibly safe bet that Truex, Busch and Harvick will be three of the four drivers racing for the championship at Homestead-Miami Speedway in November. We’ve said that before, but its a statement that gets more and more certain with each passing week. The three drivers, along with Clint Bowywer, have combined to win all of the non-restrictor plate races on the Cup Series schedule.

Bowyer is the leading candidate to be the fourth driver in that title mix. He’s got the fourth-most playoff points. But that spot is grasped tenuously.

A history of (mostly Florida) recruits committing with Chucky dolls

It’s a tribute to past Gator defensive linemen Dante Fowler and Dominique Easley.

College football recruits that sign with the Florida Gators have started carrying on a tradition — using a Chucky doll to make their announcements. Yes, Chucky, the murderous doll that comes to life from the late 1980s and ’90 movies. It may sound odd, but there’s a real reason for this — it’s a tribute to past Gator defensive linemen. The tradition was started in 2011 by former Gator Dominique Easley:

“When I was a freshman last year, when Ease had [Chucky], I used to be with him all the time. I used to kidnap [Chucky] from him and stuff like that. So he always came with me,” he explained.

“I used to go to [Easley’s] room and we’d just watch TV and I’d be like, ‘Alright, I’m leaving and taking [Chucky] with me.’ He’d say, ‘Where you going with him?’ I’ll be like, ‘No, I’m just going outside in the hallway.’ And then [Chucky] ends up spending the night with me and stuff like that.”

Easley was drafted in the first round of the 2014 NFL draft by the New England Patriots, and has been with the LA Rams since 2016.

Former Florida defensive end Dante Fowler Jr., who was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars and is now with the LA Rams, carried on the tradition in 2013:

Since then we’ve seen a lot of players — both Gators and non-Gators — carry on the tradition coined by Fowler and Easley.

February 2015

Former Auburn Tiger Byron Cowart committed to the Tigers with a Chucky doll, citing Easley and Fowler as the inspiration.

This one though was likely a troll directed at Florida — Cowart was targeted by the Gators, but ended up at Auburn. The irony here is that Auburn had recently hired former Gator coach Will Muschamp as its defensive coordinator.

Cowart ended up transferring to Maryland in 2017.

February 2018

Four-star linebacker Andrew Chatfield picked Florida by donning a Gators cap and then holding up a Chucky doll on National Signing Day.

Chatfield said Fowler and Easley were the inspiration, too.

Shortly after Chatfield’s commitment, Chatfield’s teammate, linebacker Nesta Silvera, committed to Miami with the Chucky doll, too.

November 2018

Current Gator players have kept the tradition, too. Chucky made an appearance before Florida’s game against Florida State, too:

Most recently, defensive end Lloyd Summerall announced he’d be signing with the Gators with a Chucky doll on his lap:

While this trend seems to be mostly continued by Florida players, it’s clear that going to Gainesville isn’t a requirement for using it. We’ll see how long the Chucky doll tradition lives on!
